SOOPER YOOPER Author Honored in N.Y.

Thursday, September 23, the late environmental, activist artist/illustrator Mark Heckman, known throughout Michigan for his colorful billboards, won the top Media Great Laker Award at the 2010 Great Lakes Restoration conference in Buffalo, New York, attended by almost 300 members representing over 130 national environmental groups.

Ellen Satterlee and Terri McCarthy, Executive Director and V.P. of the Wege Foundation, stand behind Mark Heckman’s widow Diane and Mark Newman, Heckman’s collaborator. Diane is holding her husband’s book Sooper Yooper completed shortly before Mark died from cancer this spring. Featuring an environmental super hero out of the U.P. (Yooper) Heckman’s book is an entertaining teaching tool on threats to the Great Lakes aimed at young people.
